High Friction Limit of the Kramers Equation : the Multiple Time Scale Approach

چکیده

The purpose of the paper is to give a pedagogical introduction to the multiple time-scale technique, on the example of the high friction limit of the Kramers equation. We begin with a discussion of the standard perturbation technique as presented in van Kampen’s reference book V K , which will be shown to fail in the long-time limit. Application of the multiple time-scale technique avoids these difficulties and leads to a uniform expansion in powers of the inverse of the friction. Analogy with the ChapmanEnskog expansion is discussed. Accepted for publication in American Journal of Physics February 2008

Non-Abelian linear Boltzmann equation and quantum correction to Kramers and Smoluchowski equation.

A quantum linear Boltzmann equation, constructed in terms of the operator-valued dynamic structure factor of the macroscopic system the test particle is interacting with, is proposed. Due to this operator structure it is a non-Abelian linear Boltzmann equation and when expressed through the Wigner function it allows for a direct comparison with the classical one. Considering a Brownian particle...

The Smoluchowski-Kramers Limit of Stochastic Differential Equations with Arbitrary State-Dependent Friction

We study a class of systems of stochastic differential equations describing diffusive phenomena. The Smoluchowski-Kramers approximation is used to describe their dynamics in the small mass limit. Our systems have arbitrary state-dependent friction and noise coefficients. We identify the limiting equation and, in particular, the additional drift term that appears in the limit is expressed in ter...

Approach to quantum Kramers' equation and barrier crossing dynamics.

We have presented a simple approach to quantum theory of Brownian motion and barrier crossing dynamics. Based on an initial coherent state representation of bath oscillators and an equilibrium canonical distribution of quantum-mechanical mean values of their co-ordinates and momenta we have derived a c number generalized quantum Langevin equation. The approach allows us to implement the method ...

A Generalized Smoluchowsky Equation: The Hydrodynamical and Thermodynamical Picture of Brownian Motion

We present a systematic expansion of Kramers equation in the high friction limit. The latter is expanded within an operator continued fraction scheme. The relevant operators include both temporal and spatial derivatives and a covariant derivate or gauge like operator associated to the potential energy. Trivially, the first order term yields the Smoluchowsky equation. The second order term is re...

3 O ct 2 00 6 Multiple time - scale approach for a system of Brownian particles in a non - uniform temperature field

The Smoluchowsky equation for a system of interacting Brownian particles in a temperature gradient is derived from the Kramers equation by means of a multiple time-scale method. The interparticle interactions are assumed to be represented by a mean-field description. We present numerical results that compare well with the theoretical prediction together with an extensive discussion on the presc...
